What is naturopathic medicine? It is a comprehensive system of primary health care that emphasizes the use of natural therapies. The person rather than the disease is being treated. That is, to treat the cause and not just the symptoms. It involves six principles:

The healing power of nature (Vis medicatrix naturae): The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health when obstacles are removed.

Identify and treat the cause (Tolle causam): Don’t just treat the symptoms. Underlying causes of disease must be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness.recover completely from illness.

First do no harm (Primum no nocere): Utilize the most natural, least invasive, and least toxic therapies first.

Treat the whole person (The multifactorial nature of health and disease): Address not only the physical disease but also emotional, mental, social, and spiritual factors.

The doctor as teacher (Docere): Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining optimal health.

Prevention (Prevention is the best "cure"): The ultimate goal of any health care system should be prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of life-habits that create good health.
